Cricut Explore Air vs Silhouette Cameo 3

As the new Silhouette Cameo 3 has been released, many are comparing their new features to that of the Cricut Explore. Although both are very popular machines they have some pretty specific differences that I decided to highlight below:

The Silhouette cameo 3 is one of the newest die cut machines by Silhouette. Although it is not as strong as the Cricut Explore it can cut most materials just fine. With this machine, you can cut lined media up to 10 feet long without using a cutting mat. It also has dual carriages which enable you to print and cut without stopping the machine to swap out tools. It also allows for Bluetooth connection as well.

A nice feature the Cameo has is the PixScan technology which allows you to take pictures with your camera and send them to the machine. You can also use the scan and cut feature.

A huge factor when it comes to the Cameo is the Silhouette Studio Designer software. Its power allows users to buy, import, or create their own designs from scratch. This is great for those that have graphic design experience and can be a great learning lesson for those who aren’t experienced with this skill set.

THE CRICUT

Another popular die cut machine that many buys is the Cricut Explore Air. It’s reviewed as being much easier to use compared to Silhouette and allows users to cut and draw up to 12 x 24 inches. Like the Cameo 3, the Cricut comes with dual carriages and is also Bluetooth and iPad compatible, and even has a print and cut feature as well.

The two factors that make the Cricut Explore so easy to use is the Smart Set Dial that allows users to adjust blade depth and the Design Space Software that is beginner friendly and great for those who are not tech savvy.

Is the Silhouette Cameo or the Cricut Explore Stronger?

Both machines obviously have some pros and cons but when it comes to being stronger, according to testing, the Cricut Explore is stronger than the Silhouette Cameo. It comes with a German carbide blade and can cut more materials than the Silhouette can.

Please note that the Silhouette Cameo can cut some of the same materials but not as thick as the Cricut can cut them.

DIFFERENCES

The Software both machines use is probably one of the biggest differences between the two. The Silhouette Design Studio has more powerful software with more advanced technology. It allows users to have freedom when it comes to creating their own designs. The basic edition of the Silhouette software is free, but if you want to use SVG files, you must upgrade the software for $50.

The Cricut Design Space software is much more simple and is great for those needing to learn from the beginning. Most likely those using this software aren’t ready to create their designs from scratch yet. Although you can create designs from scratch using this software, their options are very limited.

WHY CHOOSE CRICUT?

If you are looking for a die cut machine that leaves you with few complications and provides a straightforward and easy experience the Cricut Explore is perfect for you. This machine is also stronger than the Cameo but make sure you have an internet connection to connect to their software since it is only available online.

WHY CHOOSE SILHOUETTE CAMEO?

This cutting machine will give you the freedom to create more advanced designs and shapes. Although it is not as powerful as the Cricut it still has great power to it, it’s cutting force is just limited to 210 grams so you can’t cut as many materials with it. Also, note that in order to import .svg you will need to upgrade your software.
